At the very core of our mission as Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España is our unavoidable commitment to sustainability, not only as a response to the present demands of the world in which we live, but also as a responsibility towards the legacy we have received and which we will leave to future generations.

At our Viña Real winery, we have materialised this commitment through more responsible practices, aware of our responsibility to preserve the environment. This commitment is not only a business choice; it is a deep-rooted conviction that drives our decisions and daily actions. Thus, we have implemented a Sustainability Plan 2020-2025, focused on reducing carbon emissions with the goal of achieving zero net emissions by 2050, aligned with the United Nations Race to Zero Campaign.

Our sustainability measures

Carbon Footprint Verification

We have been conducting an annual verification of the Company’s carbon footprint—including the vineyard—since 2020, based on the international ISO 14064 standard.

Sustainable Vineyard Management

Sustainable management of our vineyards. Reduction of phytosanitary products, use of cover crops to increase soil biodiversity, key designs to maximise water use and avoid run-off and erosion.

Renewable Electricity

Use of electricity from 100% renewable sources. Use of electricity companies with a Guarantee of Renewable Origin (GdO) whose associated emissions are 0 kg CO2 eq/KWh consumed.
Installation of photovoltaic panels for the production of self-generated renewable energy. Viña Real has an installed capacity of 280 kW, which accounted for 34% of the energy consumed in 2025.

Circular economy

Valorization of Winemaking Byproducts: Through specialized contractors, we valorize winemaking byproducts—such as pomace and lees—by transforming them into new resources. These byproducts yield compounds such as tartaric acid, as well as raw materials for other industries, including grape seed oil and natural colorants.

Water Use Reduction

Various strategies have been developed to ensure the responsible management of this resource through the monitoring and optimization of cleaning processes in the different areas of the winery. A new system, developed by CVNE, has been installed to automate the cleaning processes involved in racking wine from barrels; this system is more efficient and hygienic.

Sustainable Packaging

Continue with the use of Sustainable Packaging, through the use of bottles with glass reduction; use of recycled cardboard boxes, and use of returnable pallets.

Certifications

International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA)

Viña Real, as part of Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España, has joined the International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA) organisation. The aim of the organisation is to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, guaranteeing constant emission reductions in line with the intermediate targets in 2030, aligned with the United Nations Race to Zero Campaign. It is the most internationally recognised organisation in the wine sector, sharing strategies to reduce emissions and developing methodologies for their measurement. Vineyards are included in the calculation of emissions. C.V.N.E. is a Gold Member.

ISO 14.064-1 – Organizational GHG Inventory

CVNE certificate quantifying and verifying the organization’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions: Scope 1, which includes direct emissions; Scope 2, which covers indirect emissions associated with electricity consumption; and Scope 3, which accounts for other indirect emissions generated throughout the value chain. This certification demonstrates our commitment to and improvement in our environmental performance, as well as our compliance with sustainability and climate action goals.
